Staff attorneys from the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) visited HLS to give a presentation and training on the Asian American Poll Monitoring Project that it is running for the upcoming presidential election. Basically, the Project monitors whether various voting rights laws are being enforced in Asian American communities. It does so by orrganizing volunteers to conduct exit polls at 100 sites across 14 states.
The event was exciting, especially because it introduced APALSA members to the various laws applicable to the voting process and to Asian American voters in particular. AALDEF also gave powerful examples of previous violations that have occurred during elections. The event also included a training session for those members who plan to volunteer on Election Day to conduct exit polls.
APALSA intends to continue to participate in programs like this that ensure that Asian American rights are being protected in communities across the nation.
