President – Taylor Bates

Taylor is a 2L from Vermont and a 2012 graduate of Tufts University.  During his 1L summer, Taylor served as a law clerk for the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he worked on comprehensive immigration reform, judicial nominations, and the response to Shelby County v. Holder.  Before law school, Taylor worked as the finance director for Vermont Attorney General Bill Sorrell, and interned with CAP and the White House Office of Legislative Affairs.  Please contact Taylor (tbates@jd15.law.harvard.edu) if you have any questions about HLS Democrats.

Vice President – Neil Makhija

Neil Makhija is a 2L from Lehighton, PA, and a 2009 graduate of Sarah Lawrence College. Before law school, he was New York City Regional Assistant for US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. In 2010, he worked for US Senate Candidate Adm. Joe Sestak and the Office of Vice President Joe Biden. Neil spent 1L summer in the Complex Fraud and Public Corruption Units of the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.  At HLS, Neil has been Senior Policy Editor on the Harvard Law and Policy Review, an organizer for HLS for Elizabeth Warren, and the Director of Professor and Practitioner Engagement of ACS. He is an avid squash player.

Vice President/Treasurer – Erin Bloom

Erin is a 2L from Portland and a graduate from Willamette University in Oregon; she is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a Truman Scholar. She worked for Obama’s 2008 campaign in Oregon, AIPAC, and the US Trade Representative in D.C. Besides HLS Democrats, her on-campus activities include ACS, the National Security Journal, and Harvard Law Students for Reproductive Justice.

Elections Chair – Paul Suitter

Paul is a 2L from Oakfield, Maine and a 2009 graduate of Bates College. Before law school, he taught middle school science for three years in the Boston area as part of Teach for America. Paul spent his 1L summer working for the Federal Election Commission in Washington, DC. At HLS Paul is also a Resident Assistant in Ames Hall,  Vice President of the American Constitution Society at HLS, an editor of the Harvard Law and Policy Review,  a 2L representative on the student government, and a member the Harvard Curling Team.

Outreach Director – Sophie Kim

Sophie is a 3rd year JD/MPP and a 2008 graduate of Rice University. Before law school, she worked for the World Health Organization, researched universal health care in Canada on a Fulbright, and received a master’s in global health at Oxford. During the past two summers, Sophie has worked in the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office and in the Office of the General Counsel for the Secretary of Defense. At HLS, she is the President of the American Constitution Society, an Executive Editor of the Harvard Law and Policy Review, and Political Chair of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association.

Communications Director – Maggie Dunbar

Maggie Dunbar is the communications director of the HLS Democrats. She is a 2L, originally from the Central Valley of California. She attended UC Berkeley for her undergraduate degree in Language and Political Power before working at the Stanislaus Family Justice Center and later at the Family Service Agency of San Francisco.  At HLS, she is active in the Drama Society, the Women’s Law Association, and the Journal of Law and Gender.  She can be reached at mdunbar@jd15.law.harvard.edu and is happy to answer any questions.

Events Director – Tara Norris

Tara is a 2L and a graduate of UCLA. Before law school, she was the Assistant Debate Coach for Harvard-Westlake School and worked for the Lanier Law Firm in Los Angeles, CA. She spent her 1L summer at the  ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project and was a Summer Theory Institute Fellow. Tara also serves as the Community Service Director of ACS and the Vice Co-Chair of the Mississippi Delta Project.

Leadership Training Director – Jordan Moran

Jordan is a 2L and a graduate of the University of Virginia.  Before law school, he served for three years as an Honors Paralegal Specialist with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act Unit in the U.S. Department of Justice, Criminal Division, Fraud Section. Jordan spent his 1L summer in the Office of Legal Policy at the U.S. Department of Justice, and he will be interning with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston during the fall 2013 semester. Outside of the HLS Democrats, Jordan is the Membership Director of ACS and an Editor on the Harvard Law Review.

Fundraising Co-Director – Amish Shah

Amish is a 2L from Okemos, Michigan and a graduate of the George Washington University. He has worked for the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, the Department of Education, and the United States’ Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Michigan. Besides HLS Dems, his on-campus activities include the Harvard Law and Policy Review, the Harvard Business Law Review and the Tenant Advocacy Project.

Fundraising Co-Director – Sam Wheeler

Sam is a 2L from Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. Sam is a graduate of the College of William and Mary. After college, Sam worked on several campaigns in Western Pennsylvania and the city of Pittsburgh. In addition to his responsibilities with the HLS Democrats, Sam is a member of the Harvard Defenders.

Foreign Policy Director – Sasha Pippenger

Sasha is a second-year student at Harvard Law School. She has worked for the United Nations, the International Rescue Committee, and the International Crisis Group and has done field work in Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Jordan, India, and Turkey. In addition to the Harvard Dems, she is on the Executive Board of the National Security and Law Association, and the Harvard Negotiators. She is from Vancouver, Canada and holds a B.A. in Peace and Conflict Studies from UC Berkeley.

Senior Adviser – Jordan Grossman

Jordan is a 3L and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. Before law school, he served as Special Advisor and Deputy to the Deputy Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and worked on the Obama-Biden Transition Team and the 2008 Obama campaign. At HLS, he served as 2012-2013 President of the American Constitution Society (ACS) chapter and Outreach Director of the HLS Democrats, worked as a Teaching Fellow, is the Co-President of the Harvard Law Golf Club, and performs in the Parody. Jordan is also an ACS Next Generation Leader.
