Co-President – Taylor Bates

Taylor is a 3L from Vermont and a 2012 graduate of Tufts University. During his 2L summer, Taylor worked in the London and Washington, D.C. offices of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. During his 1L summer, Taylor served as a law clerk for the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he worked on comprehensive immigration reform, judicial nominations, and the response to Shelby County v. Holder. Before law school, Taylor worked as the finance director for Vermont Attorney General Bill Sorrell, and interned with CAP and the White House Office of Legislative Affairs.  Please contact Taylor (tbates@jd15.law.harvard.edu) if you have any questions about HLS Democrats.

Co-President – Sarah Gitlin

Sarah Gitlin is a 2L from New York and a graduate of Columbia University. Her background is on Democratic Congressional campaigns in her home state, where she’s held jobs in everything from fundraising to press to field. In her spare time, she loves reading, hiking, and traveling the world.

Vice President – Kulani Jalata

Kulani Jalata is the VP of HLS Democrats and the coordinator of the Political Skills Workshop Series. She is a 2L from Knoxville, TN, and a 2012 graduate of Princeton University. She spent her 1L summer as a legal intern at Human Rights First. In addition to HLS Democrats, Kulani is active in the Social Enterprise Law Association, the Harvard Black Law Studies Association, the Harvard National Security Journal, and Harvard Negotiation Law Review. Treasurer – Derek Cash

Derek grew up near Little Rock, Arkansas, where he attended a very small but awesome school called Hendrix College. During college he volunteered with several state and local political campaigns. Since starting law school, he’s interned with Lambda Legal in Chicago, as well as Bay Area Legal Aid in San Francisco. His areas of interest include poverty issues, income inequality, and LGBT issues.

Communications Director – Kyle Strickland

Kyle is a 2L from Columbus, Ohio and a 2013 graduate of The Ohio State University. In college, Kyle served as Communications Director and Vice President of Ohio State’s College Democrats chapter. During his 1L summer, Kyle served as a legal intern with the Ohio House Democratic Caucus. In addition to his involvement with HLS Democrats, Kyle is the student government’s Director of Student Organizations.

Outreach Director – Paul Suitter

Paul is a 3L from Oakfield, Maine and a 2009 graduate of Bates College. Before law school, he taught middle school science for three years in the Boston area as part of Teach for America. Paul spent his 1L summer working for the Federal Election Commission in Washington, DC. In addition to HLS Dems, Paul is also the President of the American Constitution Society at HLS.

Events Co-Director – Shammas Malik

Events Co-Director  Amish Shah

Amish Shah is a 3L at Harvard Law School. He grew up in Okemos, Michigan, and is a 2012 graduate of the George Washington University.  This past summer, Amish worked as a summer associate in the healthcare group of Ropes and Gray LLP. Amish has also interned for the United States Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Michigan, the Department of Education, and the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. Amishcurrently serves as a Legal Fellow at the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center at Harvard, where he works primarily on three focus areas at the center: Data and Safety Monitoring, Return of Clinical Trial Results To Subjects, and Global Clinical Trial Regulatory Policy. Amish has also served as a policy editor and articles editor for the Harvard Law and Policy Review and has worked as a tenant advocate for the Tenant Advocacy Program.

Political Workshop and Events Deputy Director  Zach Sokoloff

Zach Sokoloff is a 2L, born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a degree in Economics and went on to Teach For America, where he taught middle and high school Algebra I. Zach was a 1L last year, and as a member of the JD/MBA program, is located at HBS for 2014-15. This past summer he worked in a legal aid bureau on community economic development and housing issues.

Policy Director – Thea Sebastian

Thea Sebastian is a 2L at Harvard Law School. Originally from Massachusetts, she holds degrees from Harvard College, Oxford University and the Hunter School of Education. Her work experience includes a blend of teaching, advocacy and policy work at organizations that include Climate Science Watch, the Martha Coakley for Senate campaign, Teach for America, New Energy Finance and the White House Domestic Policy Council. Her interests include social mobility, social enterprise, power yoga and completely overbooking herself.

Campaigns Director – Sophie Kim

Sophie is a 4th year JD/MPP and a 2008 graduate of Rice University. Before law school, she worked for the World Health Organization, worked on access to education and health care issues in Lesotho and Canada on a Fulbright, and received a master’s in global health at Oxford. During her law school summers, Sophie has worked in the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office, the Office of the General Counsel for the Secretary of Defense, McDermott Will & Emery, and Bet Tzedek Legal Services. She serves on the National Board of Directors of the American Constitution Society and was previously the Harvard Chapter President. She has also been an Executive Editor of the Harvard Law and Policy Review and Political Chair of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association.

Recruitment Director – Jeff Huberman

Jeff Huberman is a 2L and grew up right outside of Boston in Newton, Massachusetts and went to college at Tulane University in New Orleans, where he was involved in public service activities related to Hurricane Katrina. In between college and Law School, Jeff worked on a US Senate Campaign and was a Budget Analyst for the Massachusetts House Ways and Means Committee. Last summer, Jeff worked in the Appellate Section of the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and hopes to return to Washington for the summer of 2015. Outside of HLS, Jeff is a huge Boston sports fan and enjoys traveling.

Social Co-Chair – Kate Monks

Kate is a 2L from Maryland and a 2013 graduate of Brown University. Before law school, Kate interned in the U.S. House of Representatives for the Democratic Whip, Steny Hoyer. Kate spent her 1L summer at the U.S. Department of Justice in the Office of Legal Policy. In addition to the HLS Dems, she is a Senior Managing Editor and Article Editor for the Harvard Law and Policy Review.

Social Co-Chair – Ally Coll Steele

Ally is a 2L from Bethesda, Maryland and a graduate of Tulane University. Before law school, she served as Press Secretary on the Senate Budget Committee and worked on a number of Democratic political campaigns, including for Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) in 2012, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) in 2010, and on President Obama’s 2008 campaign. She spent her 1L summer at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia. At HLS, she is involved with the American Constitution Society, the Harvard Law and Policy Review, the Women’s Law Association and the Prison Legal Assistance Project.

Corey Jones is from Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. He attended The George Washington University. After graduating he worked as a legal assistant in the Office of the White House Counsel for a year. He now is a 2L, and continues to be a New Orleans Saints and L.A. Lakers fan.

Regional Development Director – Amal Elbakhar

Amal Elbakhar is a rising 2L at Harvard Law School and is a 2011 graduate of Hunter College/Macaulay Honors College.
