We know what can happen on Election Day when no one’s watching. Every election, our voter hotline is busy with reports of malfunctioning machines, long lines, and voter disenfranchisement. That’s why we’re building a dedicated team of trained legal volunteers in New Hampshire to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard on Election Day. To do that, we need you and lawyers throughout New England to join us in protecting the fundamental right to vote this November 6th. Counsel volunteers do not need to be licensed to practice law in a state to be a poll observer there. Volunteers will receive training on the relevant laws and be provided written materials.

Sign up here! This is the only way to become an OFA poll watcher on Election Day.

Interested in politics? Want to have a chance to talk OFF THE RECORD with the former Governor of Pennsylvania?

The HLS Democrats have been invited to a breakfast with former Governor Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania.

This event will be an off-the record, intimate breakfast at the Institute of Politics. There will be no set topic and the conversation will be free-flowing. This is an incredible opportunity to talk intimately with a dynamic political leader.

Date: Wednesday, October 12

Time: 8:45 to 10:30 am

Ed Rendell served as Governor of Pennsylvania from 2003 through 2011. From 2008 to 2009 he was the Chairman of the National Governors Association. Prior to serving as Governor, he served as the Mayor of Philadelphia. He is currently a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. He has a J.D. from Villanova University and practiced law at the Philadelphia-based firm of Ballard Spahr.

Who: Larry Soler, CEO of The Partnership for a Healthier America

When: Monday, October 23rd @ Noon

Where: Pound 101

Description:

Larry Soler heads The Partnership for a Healthier America, an organization devoted to working with the private sector to ensure the health of our nation’s youth by solving the childhood obesity crisis. Just over a year old and created in conjunction with – but independent from – Let’s Move!, PHA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit that is led by some of the nation’s most respected health and childhood obesity advocates.

Prior to joining PHA, Mr. Soler was Chief Operating Officer for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a $200 million voluntary health organization. During his tenure leading JDRF Government Relations, the program was recognized by the National Journal as one of the most powerful interest groups in Washington, D.C. The Wall Street Journal said, “not since AIDS activists stormed scientific meetings in the 1980s has a patient group done more to set the agenda of medical research.” Time magazine called JDRF “one of the nation’s most forceful disease advocacy groups.”

Mr. Soler received his J.D. from George Washington University and is a member of the Maryland and D.C. Bar Associations.

Cosponsored by the Food Law Society, HLS Democrats, Child and Youth Advocates, and the HLS Mississippi Delta Project.

Dr. Jennifer M. Callahan

State Representative, Massachusetts General Court (2003-11)

Dr. Jennifer Callahan has had a long history of public service at the municipal and state levels of government. In 2002, she was the first woman elected to serve in the Massachusetts House of Representatives for the 18th Worcester District. She went on to serve four consecutive terms in the Legislature under three different House Speakers. She was appointed to a number of important Joint Committees including Higher Education, Public Health, Community Development & Small Business and Commerce & Labor. She served on multiple legislative caucuses as well as the Nat’l Foundation for Women Legislators, Nat’l Conference of State Legislatures and Women in Government Foundation.

Legislatively, Representative Callahan was considered a tenacious policy maverick by constituents and colleagues alike for being an independent voter and strong voice on behalf of her District. The Boston Globe noted her as one of Beacon Hill’s ‘Brave Souls’ in her stands against House Leaders in the name of restoring the public’s trust. Statewide, she was considered a leader for her work on ethics reform and increased government accountability. She led the charge for transparency on Beacon Hill, before it was politically expedient to do so, having filed and pushed a series of comprehensive reform bills and open government legislation. She was the only legislator to testify before the Governor’s Task Force on Public Integrity and repeatedly stood up on the House floor to fight for important changes on how legislative business is conducted on behalf of the people of the Commonwealth. She is also known as a policy leader on variety of economic development, healthcare, education and animal cruelty issues. Prior to serving in the Massachusetts General Court, she was elected as both a Selectman and School Official for the Town of Sutton.

She holds a Doctorate in Higher Education Policy Research and Administration and a Masters of Public Health from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was a Case University Scholar at Boston University where she received both a Bachelors of Science in Nursing and a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology. She has also been a licensed Registered Nurse, Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Worcester and a nationally Certified Health Education Specialist for many years. She was a former senior advisor and quality expert for system-wide clinical performance improvement, service outcomes and strategic planning at a major academic medical institution.

She has received many notable legislative and community service commendations for outstanding leadership, including those for her enduring commitment to hunger relief. She and her husband Michael have been lifelong residents of the Blackstone Valley, where she was raised on an apple orchard as a first generation immigrant daughter in a family of six children.
