North American South Asian Law Student Association (NASALSA) Conference

The annual conference “Celebrating 15 Years of Strength, Success, and Solidarity” will be held on February 15th and 16th, 2013 in New York City at Columbia Law School. This year’s keynote speakers will be Rachna Bhowmik, White House Office of Cabinet Affairs and Pratik Shah, Office of the Solicitor General.

Harvard SALSA will subsidize the registration, hotel prices, dinner on Friday, and brunch on Sunday. Last year’s fee was $75/person (we are still working out this year’s numbers), but we need an idea of how many people will be attending this year to do so. Please email us at harvardsalsa@gmail.com ASAP if you are interested in attending the conference! We have to register by February 1^st for lower registration rates!

In 2005, children of sex workers in Kolkata’s Sonagachi red light district came together to form their own organization, Amra Padatik, drawing inspiration from the work that their mothers have been doing to demand their right to sex work as work. The film journeys through the lives of five Amra Padatik members whose entangled realities do not paint a picture of helplessness but of political assertiveness and social consciousness. Stereotypical images of their suffering are something that many of them identify with, yet, far from despair and fear, in the face of adversity, their responses are far more complex, hopeful and strong.
