We are seeking students to co-chair one of SPIN’s three major philanthropic programs: Post-Graduate Student-Funded Fellowship, L-STAR and One Day’s Work.

The Post-Graduate Student-Funded Fellowship is a newly launched fellowship that aims to support the public interest work of HLS graduates with funds raised entirely from donations by students, and in the process, to foster a greater sense of community and philanthropy on campus.

L-STAR (Law Student Travel and Accommodations Reimbursement Program) is a national fund-raising initiative that runs in conjunction with law school on-campus interviewing programs. If a law student stays with family or friends instead of in a hotel during a callback interview, the interviewing law firm(s) agrees to donate the funds saved to SPIF or other HLS public interest funding organizations.

One Day’s Work seeks to promote a culture of giving by increasing charitable contributions among young professionals. HLS students as well as our peers at other schools across the country are asked to commit to donating the equivalent of One Day’s Work to a charitable cause that interests them, including, but not limited to, the student public interest funding on campus. The program makes every effort to assure the dependability and fiscal responsibility of all the charities with which it associates so that the money is efficiently and effectively employed.

Interested applicants should send a resume and a brief statement of interest (indicating the position(s) they are interested in) to Deeona Gaskin at dgaskin@jd12.law.harvard.edu by March 25, 2011.

SPIN has put together a directory with up-to-date contact and co-sponsorship information for public interest organizations at HLS. We hope that this directory will facilitate a cooperative and successful spring semester!

Click here to view the directory.

The Student Public Interest Network’s purpose is to encourage students to dream big and then get the support to follow through. We’re a support system, a social community, and a student and alumni network for students interested in public interest work during their summers and upon graduation. We hold social and career guidance events every year, and informally connect students and alumni with a diverse choice of career paths.

The Student Public Interest Network helps students connect with each other and with alumni who work in public interest. We define public interest broadly to include traditional nonprofits as well as government and international work. SPIN holds regular events focusing on community building and informal peer advising. SPIN also provides support for students who choose not to work at firms with our fly-out week parties and summer email lists.
