This was undoubtedly a historic year for women in elected office. Yet, women still make up only 19% of Congress, and hold only five governorships in the country. After an exhilarating election cycle, the WLA hopes that this conference will be an opportunity to build momentum. We are honored to welcome Stephanie Schriock, the president of EMILY’s List, join us as the 2013 keynote speaker. Under Stephanie’s leadership, EMILY’s List played a fundamental role in ensuring that the 2012 election was record breaking for female candidates. In addition, panelists will discuss harmful effects of the persistent underrepresentation of women in leadership positions, and will present potential strategies for closing the gender gap in the future. We hope to provide a forum for our community to explore and critically examine what roles lawyers can play in pursuit of equal representation of women in the political process. Participants will also consider questions such as, does “more women” leaders equal more “pro-woman” policies? What role can lawyers play in furthering women in the political sphere?

2:20-3:35pm: Voter Disenfranchisement: Whose Voices are Represented?
3:40-4:55pm: 2012: Was it the Year of the Woman?
